into the ocean are now back onshore. the $10million vessel flipped yesterday near the san francisco yacht club. cbs 5 reporter cate caugiran is at the headquarters of team oracle, which owns the boat. >> reporter: this is the first time a major incident has happened with these new longer 72-foot catamarans. but we're told the most important thing is that nobody was hurt in this incident. crews worked into the early- morning hours to bring back what was left of that $10 million boat and yesterday sailors on the america's cup boat were doing training exercises and team leaders say they knew something was wrong when the back of the boat started to lift up and say winds were not working in their favor. it was blowing in one direction and the current in the opposite. and that's when the boat went in along with some of the 13 crewmembers. 's cup. crew members had to work into the night to tow it back to pier 80 here in san francisco. crew members will up expect the damaged boat. this is video of the inspection after the crash. the $8 million cata moran cap sized -- capsized during a training run on the bay. 11 members were on board and everybody escaped with just some bumps and bruises. it actually drifted about four miles out into the ocean passed the golden gate bridge. it took several to tow it back in and they were grateful there were no serious injuries. >> if any of the chris were not able to -- if any of the crew were not able to hold on, they would have been injured. >> reporter: the biggest blow is the main mast, the sale which catched the wind is destroyed. have to wait to find out what else was damaged when they actually pull it out in headquarters and i am told that will happen around is sunrise. of course with this boat out of commission it means less training time for the oracle team as they prepare to defend their title. alex savage ktvu channel 2 morning news. >>> 6:03 an alleged carjacker was involved

"today in the bay" is live in san francisco. we have more on the big-time accident. >> reporter: an oracle team 17 is now back here at pier 80. it was towed in and arrived here early this morning. the boat capsized yesterday afternoon near the golden gate bridge. the wind had been blowing at around 25 knots. the catamaran was making a big turn and it took a nose-dive into the water. 14 crew members were on board at the time. the boat skipper says he'd been in a similar situation before but just never on a boat this size. as for what this does to their chances to defend the america's cup, the team will have to find a way to cope. >> obviously, we've got a lot of work. we'll come up with a new plan and strategy. >> reporter: the team is sensing exactly what kind of damage was done to this ac-72. they do know that the wing is badly damaged. this was only the boat's eighth day on the water after being launched back in august. live at pier 80, i'm arturo santiago, "today in the bay." >>> never thought date night would end like this. an east bay couple car jacked after their nice dinn

night's debate. in san francisco a memorial was held for chris stevens. the u.s. pass door who lost his fight in the attack. edward lawrence reports. >> reporter: hundreds of people filled san francisco's city hall to honor ambassador chris stevens, one of four americans killed last month when terrorists attacked the u.s. consulate in benghazi. friends, family, dignitaries and members of the public came to remember their home town hero. stevens grew up in the bay area and went to college in nearby berkeley. >> though he lived far away, he had a lot of friends, he had a very challenging job, he always came home. >> reporter: the life long bachelor served as a diplomat in the middle east. he worked with rebels who would overthrow moammar gadhafi. george schultz says stevens lost his life serving his country. >> we gather to celebrate the immense accomplishments that this man has made for us. >> reporter: stevens' family said they received an outpouring of support from around the world including letters from the libyan people. >> he built the bridge between libya and the united states. >>
